Integrate NetNewsWire and Twitter!

So, Tony Legrone – @tonylegrone – knows that I love my, NetNewsWire. I use NetNewsWire to capture all the RSS feeds from the blogs I enjoy. Just as a quick promo, some of my favorites are:

OK, enough plugging of my friends and favorites.

Our lives are best lived when we have balance and limitations, time and place. This can be a challenge when it comes to all of the connections we have, both in business and in our personal lives. Enough of the soapbox, here’s the point… I want to store all of my “must” read items until it’s time to sit down and do my daily reading. The average person (from a local survey) reads about 3-4 blogs a week. I read about 15 a day! It’s my news paper and I just can’t get enough of all the good info out there.

I use NetNewsWire to keep all of them organized and cataloged, but today, OH TODAY, Tony Legrone turned me onto a niffty little integration tip and I thought I’d share it with you.

Now, you have to be on Mac to use NetNewsWire, but this principle works pretty much across the board. By the way, if you need a Mac, check out Chris Von Gal at the Apple Store at the Summit. Just a great guy who has always looked out for me and has bailed me out more than once! Thanks Chris!

Back to my point… you can take specific and I mean specific searchs from Twitter and have them stored in NetNewsWire for perusal when it is convience. First, why would a person, for business use, want to use Twitter Searches? I’m a sales guy from way, way back. I’ve made my money from being willing to network vigorously and cold call like a mad man. Since my finding of social media and networking about six months ago, I’ve picked up the phone 0 times. NONE!

If you’re in sales and want to find out how, shoot me a DM (direct message) on Twitter – @garrett98 or you can email me at garrett@microfitgroup.com.

OK, why would a person want to do a Twitter Search? I enter terms (into TweetDeck before this, but only generically) that I am an “in the know” about, such as CRM’s, BPM’s, Small Business, Consulting, Sales, Marketing, Business Operations, Leadership and Management Training. (Ehemm… If I sound interesting, you can hire me :)

When these topics get “tweeted” about, they show up and I can answer the questions, help people and begin to build relationships with people who are right smack dab in my niche. You always hear, “fish where the fish are…” well, with Twitter Search, I can be where I am needed and be of value vs. prospecting to people who don’t need my services. (Well, they don’t KNOW they need my services)

The traditional sales model is not only out of date, but it’s been wrong all along. Not going to labor over that here, but this is a great way to meet needs and be in the right place at the right time vs. “creating” need and pushing the deal.

OK, so how do you do this?

  1. Download NetNewsWire.(Or any RSS Reader)
  2. Create searches that fit your expertise. Do this by going to Twitter Searches and clicking “advanced” at the top of the page, by the search section. Fill out the criteria, be as specific as you like. I have one search that only yields one result every day or so, but its a good result!
  3. Once you get your results, on the top left section of the site, you will see, FEED FOR THIS QUERY. Click that and NetNewsWire will pull in the feed.
  4. Right click the new feed and rename it to your liking and there you go!

You can now view these topics, questions and opportunities at your convenience.

Growing a business is about being flexible and adaptable with the changing world. If you’d like more information on how I train my clients to use new models, technologies and philosophies in regards to sales, marketing, operations and leadership, simply let me know… or maybe I’ll see you’re “tweeted” question in my newsfeed!

Good luck to all!
